Core Story Workshop

  • Meridian Room, 5th floor, CIC Boston

On July 24, we again welcome Chuck Goldstone of !deaworks New Venture Initiative who will be offering his groundbreaking CORE STORY STRATEGY workshop, "Getting Investors and Markets to Listen, Like You, and Do What You Want."

It's not enough to have a good idea, you need a compelling story that tells audiences who you are, what you do and why they should care. Getting them to say, "Tell me more." Making sure they remember you. Companies who do are the ones funded. Called back. Remembered.

You'll leave with over three dozen Best Practices of the most successful companies on the planet, as well as a step-by- step process to identify stakeholders and the strategies to reach them. This will promise change the way you look at every presentation/pitch you make, as it has for the 600 companies who have participated in the recent past.

AN OFFER FOR THE CIC COMMUNITY ONLY:

CIC Community members receive a 30% discount off the full-day program.

In addition, on the day prior to the workshop, there will be a drawing and two of the CIC enrollees will receive a full refund and attend for free.

Since only 5 seats are reserved for CIC members, your chances are 40% to this valuable session at no charge.

Vulnerabilities are Inevitable - Building Cloud Apps that Resist Breaches

  • Meridian Room, 5th floor, CIC Boston

Brought to you by Full Stack Boston - RSVP here

Cloud application developers are given a constant stream of instructions on how to make their applications secure:  Reject weak passwords.  Sanitize input.  Use secure cookies.  Use TLS.  Audit your code.  But, even developers who follow these guidelines still see their applications compromised because applications always have vulnerabilities.

Vulnerabilities do not have to result in application compromise, however.  If we can detect attacks as they occur, they can be stopped before they do significant damage.  Systems for detecting attacks are knows as intrusion detection systems (IDS).  Intrusion detection was first proposed in the 1970's, and today widely used systems such as Snort and Bro detect intrusions on thousands of networks.  Currently deployed IDS cannot protect against most application-level vulnerabilities; however, the techniques of intrusion detection can be used by developers to protect their applications.

This talk will explain the fundamentals of intrusion detection and how they have been used to protect systems.  It will also discuss the future and how developers can use application-level intrusion detection to provide active protection for their systems.

Attendees will receive an intrusion detection "getting started" kit to help them put the insights of the presentation into practice.

Midweek Momentum Yoga

Midweek Momentum is about keeping the yoga momentum going throughout the week. It's a simple realization. Our life and life energies are like a machine. With continued maintenance, the technology will work well. Well means, as it should. The human being as it should has tremendous ability. It is a vibrant expression of life able to handle its business with ease. You are an entrepreneur, an innovator, a leader. You being in a state of momentum is important because there are a lot of barriers to solving big problems.

This class is a blend of movement, yoga, and meditation that keeps the momentum alive for the rest of the week and weekend. Doing this each week will allow you to keep the momentum going.

Benjamin Carroll, a mystic with intense aspirations has found great joy in blending the mystical roots of yoga with the practical applications it has in day to day business and Life. Whether you are seeking business success or an all around sense of well-being, Ben has made it his business to explore new ways of offering exactly what someone might need, in any moment, to catalyze their highest growth and evolution. It is his joy and honor to create these offerings specific to the CIC business and innovation community.

F*ckup Nights Boston Vol. II

  • CIC Cambridge - Venture Cafe, 5th floor

WE ARE BACK with F*ckup Nights Boston Vol. II!

What is F*ckup Nights?

F*ckup Nights is a global movement born in Mexico in 2012 to publicly share business failure stories. Hundreds of people attend each event to hear three to four entrepreneurs share their failures. Each speaker is given 7 minutes and is able to use 10 images. After each speaker, there’s a question/answer session, as well as time for networking (and some beer).

Learn from the fails. Drink some beer. Meet some new people. Is there anything else better to do on a Wednesday night?

Doors open at 8:30 pm. First speaker goes on at 9pm. The event will be done by 10.30pm (so sad!).

This volume will include lessons from a hoverboard business, building a brand too soon, co-founder woes and worries, and things to avoid before losing your business.

Tickets available here - don't miss out!

Maptime Boston (in Cambridge)

  • CIC Cambridge - 4th Floor Kitchen

Maptime is a monthly meetup where we work on maps, learn about geospatial data, and teach each other the latest cartographic tools.

Maptime is, rather literally, time for mapmaking. Our mission is to open the doors of cartographic possibility to anyone interested by creating a time and space for collaborative learning, exploration, and map creation using mapping tools and technologies.

This open learning environment for all levels and degrees of knowledge offers intentional support for the beginner. Maptime is simultaneously flexible and structured, creating space for workshops, ongoing projects with a shared goal, and independent/collaborative work time.

Inspiration for Maptime comes from both hack nights and knitting circles. Both are models of spaces for people to create and learn together. Our goal is to provide this space with an open heart and without pretension. You can bring your own projects to work on, or just hang out and socialize or ask questions. Some people are experts, and some people are just getting started, but all of us are learning, so why not do it together?

Maptime is hands-on, so don't forget to bring your laptop! All skill levels are welcome. Beginners are especially welcome!

For more information about Maptime, visit maptime.io. Also, follow us on twitter at @MaptimeBoston.

Sketch Workshop: grow your communication skills - visibly!

  • Fab@CIC

Hosted by Fab@CIC and DockYard

To make ideas happen, you must communicate with many stakeholders. Sketching alone or together is a great way to rapidly generate and give shape to your ideas.

Sketching is deceptively simple. It requires nothing more than a Sharpie and some paper. And yet, unless you’re a trained artist or chronic doodler, it can seem daunting. This workshop will teach you techniques that will enable you to visually represent your ideas so you can share them with others—and make them a reality!

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop will benefit anyone who needs to generate ideas, build consensus, and communicate outcomes. This workshop is great for designers, engineers, product developers, and anyone who wants to communicate more effectively.

What you'll learn:

- What is Visual Thinking?
- Why is Visual Thinking Important?
- How to Draw (Visual Thinking Basics)
- Creating Scenes and Stories
- What to Draw

Key takeaways:

- Practice a few basic shapes that will enable you to move beyond boxes, arrows, and stick-figures
- Generate 10 concepts in 10 minutes
- Learn how to sketch with others so that everyone has a voice
- Communicate complex ideas by telling a visual story
- Discover that you were wrong—you can sketch!

Sketch tools are included and are yours to keep! Light food and drinks will be provided.

Workshop price: $30

Khronos Boston: Introduction to Three.js 3D Graphics Workshop Redux

  • CIC Cambridge, Charles 14th floor

If you missed out last time, here's your second chance! Eric Haines is back to jumpstart your 3D web development skills!

This month you can learn the basics of three.js from an expert. This is a workshop, where if you wish you can get your hands dirty with the code, or just watch and get a sense of how three.js works. Knowing how to program in some language is all you’ll need.

Three.js is an easy way to integrate 3D content into web pages. Free and open source, it works atop WebGL, a graphics technology supported by the major web browsers on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. WebGL itself can take a bit of work to get going; three.js hides the complexity and lets you easily create objects, lights, and cameras, animate these, and handle user interactions. For a sense of the power of three.js, try some of the projects or example demos available - they're each a click away.

To prepare for the class we recommend you download three.js itself and unzip it to your laptop. To check that you're ready, go into the examples directory, click on index.html, and you should see the same example demos - give them a try. We'll all be hacking on bits of this code during the teaching session.

You can download the slideset and demo programs here. Probably the most important thing is setting up local access, so you can see textures. See slide 2 in the slide set.

After the hour-long workshop we'll break up and play with three.js or hack on projects. By the end of the class you'll know the basics of three.js and how to learn more.

Our guest lecturer is Eric Haines. Eric designed the free massive open online course "Interactive 3D Graphics", which uses three.js throughout. Among other bits of code, he contributed the teapot example to three.js. He is perhaps best known as a coauthor of the textbook "Real-Time Rendering".

Attendance is free and open to anyone, limited to 20 participants. Pizza and soda will be provided.

Parking: Street parking can be difficult to find with the ongoing construction. Firebrand Saints(where we retire to after the meetup) can validate your parking in the CIC garage.

In this talk we will discuss using ensemble learning methods to combine individual weak signals into stronger factors and assessing their predictive power for long-short equity strategies.

About Max Margenot

Max works at Quantopian as a data scientist and manages the lecture series for the academic team, coordinating content development and helping to run the company's quantitative finance workshops.

Max holds a MS in Mathematical Finance from Boston University and has a strong background in statistics and computer science.

He has implemented trading systems based on machine learning in the past and has published research on theoretical mathematics.
