One of BASG’s explicit goals is that we learn as much as we can from each other, where the very diversity of the group is one of our most valuable assets. Come join the discussion, or hang out and listen.

Friends at CIC: Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the FCC and a sophisticated supporter of technology, will be in town this week for a conversation with the innovation community. He’ll be here on Wednesday, March 6th at 3:45-4:45pm at the MIT Stata Center, Room 32-123. I’ve been asked to extend an invite to CIC clients. More information is available here. I was fortunate to have dinner with Julius last year, and I found him far-thinking about the intersection between technology and policy in an increasingly wireless world. Notably, he has supported strongly Open Internet and Net Neutrality principles in the US, he has fought efforts at the global ITU level to pass rules that would enable governments to control their domestic Internets more tightly, has acted to increase the amount of unlicensed spectrum available to improve services like WIFI, and under his leadership the FCC blocked the acquisition of T-Mobile by ATT, arguing that competition favors consumers. Who knew there was so much cool stuff that the FCC could do? It is expected that a new FCC Chair will be appointed sometime later this year, and there is rife speculation about who it might be.
Rumor has it that you can’t raise money for a consumer startup in Boston, you can’t hire talent for a consumer startup in Boston, and the Boston scene in general is very weak for all things consumer. Come hear Eric Paley from Founder’s Collective and Matt Lauzon, founder of Gemvara, discuss the facts and myths about the Boston consumer startup scene, and bring your own questions about how to build a B2C company in New England.

In this class, we’ll cover what we’ve learned from experience about the honest, content-driven way to get your site in the browsers of the users who are looking for it. There are no silver bullets – just clear advice on title tags, meta tags, urls, keywords, site organization, and most importantly, content. It’s not a magic potion, just a recipe for reaching your site’s best potential; these elements combined won’t help you game Google, but they will work with Google to get you closer to where you want to be.

However, as a 200 million person self-updating data set of professional credentials, relationship maps and business actions, LinkedIn is a powerful tool to be used skillfully and proactively in any role where relationships are helpful to success.

If you aren’t familiar with MIT’s E-Lab, it’s a course that pairs teams of MIT and Harvard students with local startup companies. The students get exposure to real business issues startups face, and the companies get free consulting help. It’s a win-win.
The way it works is that a group of students (a mixture of MBAs and engineering and science grad students) is assigned to each company. This student team will spend time learning about the company, analyzing its key issues, and generating solutions. At the end of the semester, students propose a final presentation for the host company with solutions and a custom-tailored action plan.
Host companies are are typically tech-focused and intellectual property-based, have fewer than 40 employees, and have received at least one round of outside funding. Companies usually come from (but aren’t limited to) fields like cleantech, life sciences, mobile, and Internet.
If you’re interested in serving as a host company (you don’t have to have a specific project in mind yet), you can register through the course website. Once you’ve registered and received approval for your project, you will be able to view student profiles and reach out to those you are interested in. Please see below for complete details:
Registration: Click here to apply to be an E-Lab host company.
Deadline: January 31 — act soon!
More info on the E-lab can be found here.

It was great to see Kendall Square featured on WGBH’s “Greater Boston,” hosted by Emily Rooney. First, we’ll get you set up with a local development environment, which means you’ll be able to run and make edits on your entire site from your own computer, separate from your server. Then, we’ll show you how that local environment gets tapped into a main repository where you store a copy of your code (we’ll use Github.com).
